Our Journey
From Crisis to Certification
The story of NATIVA and the sustainable RFID industry is inseparable from the Caribbean's environmental awakening. Here is the timeline of how a plastic crisis became a business opportunity, and how NATIVA turned that opportunity into certified products that resorts trust.
The Status Quo
Industry Milestone
Global hotel industry issues 1.4 billion plastic keycards annually
Research by hospitality analysts estimated the global hotel industry distributes approximately 1.4 billion single-use PVC plastic keycards every year. Each card weighs roughly 5.5 grams and takes over 450 years to decompose in landfill conditions. The hospitality sector accounts for a disproportionate share of single-use plastics globally.
Caribbean governments begin plastic policy reviews
Multiple Caribbean island governments including Barbados, Jamaica, and Antigua & Barbuda began formal reviews of single-use plastic legislation, driven by growing concern over marine plastic pollution in some of the world's most ecologically sensitive reef and sea ecosystems.
Regulatory Shift
Industry Milestone
Caribbean islands begin banning single-use PVC plastics
Barbados enacted comprehensive single-use plastic restrictions. Jamaica announced phased bans. Trinidad & Tobago and other CARICOM nations introduced similar legislation. Hotel operators in these markets began seeking alternative access solutions that comply with emerging regulations.
Green Globe certification adoption accelerates
The number of Caribbean properties holding Green Globe sustainability certification surpassed 500. Hotels discovered that plastic keycard elimination contributes measurable points toward certification criteria — creating procurement incentive beyond environmental ethics.
Early Adopters
Industry Milestone
First eco-RFID wristband programs launch at Costa Rica eco-lodges
Boutique eco-lodges in the Osa Peninsula and Monteverde regions of Costa Rica began piloting FSC-certified wood bead RFID wristbands as keycard alternatives. Rainforest Alliance certification requirements — common in Costa Rica — incentivized the switch. Guest feedback was overwhelmingly positive: wristbands were kept as souvenirs rather than discarded.
MIFARE DESFire EV3 becomes the luxury hotel standard
NXP Semiconductors announced full commercial availability of MIFARE DESFire EV3 — offering AES-128 encryption and mutual authentication. VingCard, Dormakaba, SALTO, and Onity all released firmware updates adding native DESFire EV3 support. The chip rapidly became the security standard for luxury hotel brands.
NATIVA Founded
NATIVA Milestone
NATIVA incorporates — mission to bring eco-RFID to Caribbean & LATAM resorts
Founded by a team of hospitality technology professionals with combined experience at major Caribbean resort groups. The founding thesis: the Caribbean and LATAM hospitality market lacked a specialized supplier of certified eco-RFID wristbands designed for the specific climate, regulatory, and guest experience needs of tropical resort operations. NATIVA was built to fill that gap.
First supplier partnerships and certification audits
NATIVA established manufacturing partnerships with FSC Chain of Custody certified wood suppliers and OEKO-TEX certified textile manufacturers. First-round ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 audits were completed by manufacturing partners. MIFARE DESFire EV3 chip sourcing agreements were signed with NXP-authorized distributors.

Hotels reported measurable improvement in certification scoring.
Cruise & Beach Clubs
