Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about RFID Resort eco-RFID wristbands — from lock system compatibility and waterproofing, to certifications, MOQs, and sustainability impact.
Sustainability & Certifications
Are your wristbands truly eco-friendly?
Yes. Every RFID Resort wristband is designed with end-of-life in mind. Wood Bead Wristbands use FSC Chain of Custody certified wood — bamboo, teak, rosewood, and coconut shell — sourced from responsibly managed forests. Organic Cotton Wristbands are made from GOTS-certified organic cotton certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100, confirming freedom from harmful substances. Hemp and Jute Wristbands and Event Wristbands are fully compostable under ASTM D6400 — they break down in commercial composting facilities within 180 days, leaving no harmful residue. Each product undergoes Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to quantify its environmental impact versus plastic alternatives.
What does FSC Chain of Custody certification mean?
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Chain of Custody certification tracks wood materials from a certified, responsibly managed forest all the way through the supply chain to the finished product. It means RFID Resort can trace every bead in a wood wristband back to an FSC-certified forest source — whether that is bamboo, teak, rosewood, or coconut shell. This is the gold standard for wood sourcing, ensuring no illegal logging or deforestation is involved in the production of your RFID Resort wristbands.
Are the wristbands safe for direct skin contact?
Yes. All RFID Resort textile wristbands — Organic Cotton, Bamboo Fiber, and Hemp & Jute — are certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100. This certification tests every component of the product (including threads, closures, and RFID chip casing) for over 100 harmful substances including pesticide residues, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and pH levels. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification specifically addresses direct skin contact safety — it is required for products worn against skin. Wood Bead Wristbands use marine-grade waterproof coating that is non-toxic and skin-safe.
Can the wristbands be composted at the end of their life?
Hemp & Jute Wristbands and Event & Festival Eco-Wristbands are certified compostable under ASTM D6400 — the North American standard for compostability in commercial composting facilities. The wristband body will fully biodegrade within 180 days without leaving harmful residue. The RFID chip is designed for removal before composting (it can be recycled separately or returned to RFID Resort). Wood Bead and cotton wristbands are not compostable but have significantly lower carbon footprints than PVC alternatives. Guests commonly keep wood and cotton wristbands as souvenirs, which is the ideal end-of-life scenario — extending your brand visibility at zero environmental cost.
What sustainability certifications do RFID Resort products carry overall?
RFID Resort products carry: FSC Chain of Custody (wood sourcing), OEKO-TEX Standard 100 (textile product safety), OEKO-TEX Made in Green (hemp/jute — production facility sustainability), ISO 9001:2015 (quality management), ISO 14001:2015 (environmental management), MIFARE DESFire EV3 certification (NXP chip quality), HID Compatible certification, and ASTM D6400 compostability (event and hemp/jute wristbands). We provide documentation packages for all certifications, specifically formatted to support Green Globe and Rainforest Alliance hotel certification submissions.
Technical & Lock System Compatibility
Which hotel lock systems are compatible with RFID Resort wristbands?
RFID Resort wristbands are compatible with all major hotel electronic lock platforms that support MIFARE DESFire EV3 (13.56 MHz ISO 14443-A) — including: ASSA ABLOY VingCard Essence and VingCard Signature, Dormakaba Saflok Quantum and Saflok Messenger, SALTO XS4, Onity HT Series, and HID Global RFID access systems. If your lock system accepts standard MIFARE DESFire or MIFARE Classic credentials, RFID Resort wristbands will work. We also supply 125 kHz LF (EM4100/HID format) for older lock systems. We strongly recommend requesting a free sample pack to test compatibility with your specific property lock system before placing a bulk order.
What RFID frequency and chip standard do your wristbands use?
Our primary chip standard is 13.56 MHz HF (High Frequency) using ISO 14443-A protocol, specifically NXP MIFARE DESFire EV3. This chip supports AES-128 and Triple-DES encryption with mutual authentication — the same security standard used by Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, and other major luxury hotel brands. We also offer MIFARE Classic 1K/4K and MIFARE Ultralight for lower-security applications. For legacy lock systems, we supply 125 kHz LF wristbands using EM4100 or HID Prox formats. NFC-enabled wristbands (NTAG213/215 for NDEF encoding) are available for event and mobile integration applications.
Are the wristbands waterproof? Can guests wear them in the pool or ocean?
Wood Bead Wristbands: Yes — fully marine-grade waterproof sealed. The RFID chip module is encapsulated in resin within the bead and the wood is coated with a marine-grade sealant. Safe for pool chemicals (chlorine and saltwater), UV exposure, and continuous daily immersion for the duration of a resort stay (typically 7-14 days). Organic Cotton Wristbands: Water-resistant to 1m for 30 minutes. The chip encapsulation is sealed, but the cotton wristband itself will absorb water. Suitable for pool and beach use but not continuous submersion. Bamboo Fiber Wristbands: Water-resistant, suitable for spa and humid environments — designed for spa and wellness use. Hemp & Jute Wristbands: Water-resistant but not submersible — recommended for dry-access-only properties, eco-lodges, and event applications.
Can I encode RFID Resort wristbands using my existing encoder system?
Yes. RFID Resort wristbands use the same chip formats (MIFARE DESFire EV3, MIFARE Classic, etc.) as standard hotel keycards. Your existing VingCard, Dormakaba, SALTO, or Onity encoder/programming station will program RFID Resort wristbands exactly as it programs keycards. No hardware changes or software updates are required. The only consideration is ensuring the chip format of the wristband you order matches what your lock system is configured to use (DESFire EV3, Classic, etc.). Our technical team can advise on the correct chip specification for your property.
Do you support cashless payment integration on the wristbands?
Yes. The MIFARE DESFire EV3 chip used in RFID Resort wristbands supports multiple applications simultaneously — room access plus cashless payment in a single wristband. Cashless payment integration requires a compatible point-of-sale system that supports RFID-based stored value or account-linked payments. We offer this as part of our Resort Access System package, which includes wristbands, reader hardware, and integration support with leading hospitality POS platforms. Industry data indicates all-inclusive resorts implementing RFID cashless payments see 15-30% increases in ancillary guest spending.

Environmental Impact
How much CO2 is saved by switching from plastic keycards to RFID Resort wristbands?
Based on Life Cycle Assessment data for our Wood Bead Wristbands versus an equivalent PVC keycard: Wood Bead Wristbands have approximately 78% lower carbon footprint per unit compared to a PVC keycard of equivalent function. For a 200-room resort issuing 2 keycards per room per 7-day stay at 85% occupancy, the switch to wood wristbands would prevent approximately 1.8 tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions annually, plus eliminate approximately 175 kg of PVC plastic. Organic Cotton Wristbands achieve approximately 65% lower carbon footprint versus PVC. These figures support Green Globe and Rainforest Alliance certification documentation.
What happens to RFID Resort wristbands after guest checkout?
Wood Bead and Organic Cotton Wristbands: Guests commonly keep these as souvenirs — this is by design. The wristband serves as a continuing advertisement for your resort after checkout. Guests who keep wristbands extend your brand reach at zero additional cost. Hemp & Jute and Event Wristbands: Can be collected at checkout for commercial composting (where available) or guests can home-compost hemp/jute wristbands in active compost heaps. RFID chips from compostable wristbands should be removed and recycled (RFID Resort provides chip recovery guidance). All wristbands: If not kept as souvenirs, should be diverted from general waste. We provide hotel staff with end-of-life guidance documentation.
Can switching to RFID Resort help us earn Green Globe or Rainforest Alliance certification?
Yes, significantly. Plastic keycard elimination contributes to multiple criteria in both Green Globe and Rainforest Alliance certification frameworks. RFID Resort provides: (1) Life Cycle Assessment documentation quantifying plastic reduction and CO2 savings, (2) Material certification documents (FSC, OEKO-TEX, ISO) formatted for certification submission, (3) Annual plastic reduction calculations based on your order volume, (4) Hotel-specific plastic diversion reporting. Properties using RFID Resort wristbands have reported measurable improvement in sustainability certification scoring. Contact us for a tailored certification impact assessment for your property.
Are your manufacturing facilities also eco-certified?
Yes. All RFID Resort manufacturing partners hold ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System certification, which requires documented processes for reducing environmental impact and meeting regulatory requirements. Wood bead manufacturing facilities hold FSC Chain of Custody certification from the International FSC body. Textile manufacturing facilities hold OEKO-TEX Made in Green certification (for hemp/jute) and standard production certifications for other textile lines. We conduct annual supplier audits and maintain a supplier code of conduct covering environmental practices, worker welfare, and regulatory compliance.
