What it is for

Some access problems are counting problems. A conference with four rooms, an activity programme with timed sessions, an indoor event with a capacity limit — the property needs each guest to be readable at a door and does not need the credential to survive the afternoon.

A paper band with an inlay does that at the lowest cost of anything here, and it does it without a printer, a fitting procedure or a recovery process. Issued, read, discarded.

Where the inlay sits

The inlay is laminated between paper layers rather than added on the surface, so there is no bump and nothing to catch. It also means the band is one flat piece with no rigid element, which is why it can be worn comfortably for hours despite being the simplest construction here.

The inlay position is fixed and consistent, which matters at a gate: staff and guests learn quickly where to present, and consistency across a box of 500 makes that learnable.

Water is the limit, and it is not a soft limit

Paper stock is coated, which handles a spilled drink and a damp hand. It does not handle a pool, a shower or an afternoon of rain: the fibres take up water, the stock weakens, and the band tears at the wrist fold. There is no version of this product that survives that, and choosing it for a wet environment is choosing to reissue.

For any programme with water in it, the tear-resistant synthetic band is the correct specification. The difference in cost is small next to the cost of an afternoon of replacements at a busy gate.

Dry only

This is the one construction in the catalogue where the environmental limit is absolute rather than a matter of degree. Anywhere with pools, showers or reliable rain needs a synthetic band.

Issue at speed

Bands are supplied in counted, range-labelled blocks so a gate can take a block, issue it and reconcile the count without a separate system. That is unglamorous and it is what makes a paper credential auditable.

Fitting is a single adhesive action, which is why it is the fastest credential here to issue. As with every adhesive closure, fit is final and misfits consume stock, so the order carries an allowance.

Disposal, honestly described

The band is paper with an electronic inlay inside it. That means it is not straightforwardly recyclable as paper, and a property that wants to separate the inlay needs somebody to do it, at a defined point, with a defined destination — otherwise the bands go to general waste.

We will document what the band is made of at run level. What we will not do is describe a mixed-material single-use product as an environmental choice, because it is not one; it is a cost and throughput choice, and it is a defensible one when stated as such.

When this is the wrong model

It is wrong anywhere near water, wrong for anything worn overnight, and wrong for a credential that has to look like part of a premium property.

It is also wrong where the volume is low. At small numbers the saving is immaterial and a reusable band gives a better guest experience for a negligible difference.
